1. The term ‘Bollywood’, where does it come from?

It was during the 1970’s, that this ‘derogatory’ term was coined. Apparently, it was due the fact that the Hindi Film Industry had surpassed the mighty ‘Hollywood’ in terms of producing movies annually. Furthermore, the invention of this word has been attributed to a couple individuals that include lyricist, filmmaker and scholar Amit Khanna, and journalist Bevinda Collaco. However, it was in 1932 that the term ‘Tollywood’ was given to the then powerful West Bengal industry. This was done because the Bengal movie industry was then the center of Indian cinema.

‘Nepotism’ is a word that best describes how the Hindi Film Industry function. However, there are also cases of rank outsiders tasting success in the industry.  A few tasting stardom, and the others getting recognized as actors. Examples are as follows, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Nasseruddin Shah, the late Om Puri and many others. In other words, this industry although heavily ‘Family Oriented’ does provide an opportunity for an underdog to rise.
