In this book the author Mario Puzo has managed to beautifully bring out the violent society of the mafia and the gang wars that occur within the mafia fraternity from time to time. The novel basically starts from the day of the wedding of the youngest daughter Constanzia Corleone of the main character and head of the family Don Corleone. The author then slowly takes the reader into the violent world of Don Corleone which is engaging as well as fascinating at the same time. The story takes a twist when the Don’s youngest son Michael Corleone, who returns as a war hero to his home, and it is this character of Michael Corleone that is most fascinating character amongst all the characters in the book. According to the plot an attempt to kill Don Corelone is made by Don’s rivals because of the Don’s refusal to accept an offer to support drug business, which the Don consider s as dirty business. It is this attempt at Don Corelone’s life that changes the dynamics of the story entirely. It is at this juncture that Satino Corelone or Sonny the eldest son gets killed, and this in turn forces Michael Corelone the youngest in the family who up until that point in time is just a mere spectator in his family business to really get into the family business and become the next generation ‘GODFATHER’. The rest of the book deals with the rise of Michael Corleone as the new godfather.
One of the key ingredients of this book that would impress the reader is the rich characterization of all the leading characters. Especially the characters of Don Corleone and Michael Corleone really stand out and is successful in making a deep impact in the readers mind. The one aspect of Michael Corleone character that is beautifully brought to life by the author is the transformation of Michael from a mere spectator to a cold blooded mafia leader. With regards to the main character of the book Don Corleone there is section in the book where the author of the book describes his growth from an innocent child in Sicily in Italy to eventually migrating to America and finally becoming a great leader of a mafia family, which is brought about with a lot of style and also with a lot of understanding of the Italian Mafioso by the author rather skilfully.
The language used by the author basically is simple and direct with some Italian words such as ‘Consigliere’ used to give an authentic feel to the narrative. The author in general uses a narration style that is extremely simple and neutral, as a result the narrative sounds more like a report and becomes very easy to comprehend and understand.
Thus the book is basically an absolute engaging and intense novel. Although there are certain flaws like the back stories of the characters Johnny Fontaine and Lucy Mancini are not really required as it definitely affects the flow of the narrative to a certain extent, but yet the overall impact of the book is not diluted. Another great aspect of the book is that there is no effort on the author’s part to colour the reader’s mind about the characters and thus allows for the reader to make his own judgement on the characters which makes reading even more enjoyable task rather than a tedious one. Overall this book is an absolute gripping book and a must read for all book lovers around the world.
