“A fun filled split personality” would be the best way to describe Pritam Vidrohi, a key character in the Bollywood movie Bareilly Ki Barfi directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. Referred (out of respect) as “Vidrohiji” in the movie, this fascinating character plays a major part in adding a lot of “humor and colour” to the narrative. Performed by the talented Rajkummar Rao, this character is one of the most “intriguing” supporting roles to have surfaced in Bollywood in recent years. And so, here is presenting to you a “written sketch” of this fascinating character called “Vidrohiji”.

1. The “Character” Traits of Vidrohiji:

“A mixture of pure innocence and arrogance” is the best way to describe the character Vidrohiji. According to the narrative of the movie, this character is compelled by the protagonist Chirag Dubey (played by Ayushmaan Khurrana) to become an “abrasive personality” to help win over Bitti (Kriti Sanon) the woman he loves, who is infatuated by “Vidrohiji”. This infatuation is due to the fact that Chirag has made Bitti believe that “Vidrohiji” is the author of her favorite novel “Bareilly ki Barfi”. The truth however is that the book has been written by Chirag. And so, this innocent and charming character is forced to bring out a personality that is “cocky to the core”, which he does not exists . Thus, it is reacting to the circumstances that surround him and under the shrewd guidance of Chirag that he gradually switches from pure innocence to become an arrogant individual.

2. The “Analysis” of Vidrohiji’s character:

On the surface, it certainly looks like Vidrohiji is a innocent saree salesman who does not possess self confidence. However, as soon as Chirag stimulates him to become an “arrogant” individual he quickly almost “magically” becomes one. This metamorphosis in in this character happens because (I believe) he does possess a confident personality but, unfortunately he has not been able to bring it out publicly. The reason for this lack of confidence in Vidrohji isĀ  due to the fact that his mother (played excellently by Sapna Sand in a few scenes) possesses a “domineering” personality that has ensured the suppression of this side of his personality. And hence, he required a stimulation to bring aliveĀ  the “confident” feature of his personality, which eventually is provided for by Chirag’s training.

3. The “performance” of Rajkummar Rao as Vidrohiji:

“Real and extremely hilarious” would be the apt way to describe the brilliant performance of actor Rajkummar Rao as Vidrohiji. So, be it the use of a typical Uttar Pradesh accent or a flexible body language switching from being “meek” to portraying “arrogance”, Rao just hits the perfect acting notes. The scene in which Vidrohiji meets Biti for the first is a fine example of the true brilliance of this actor, who is only getting better in every movie he acts just like “old wine”.

It is not surprising then that the movie “Bareilly ki Barfi” by grossing Rs 51.75 crores all across the country has proved to be box office success. And having seen this movie myself in the theater (twice) I can confidently say that one of the major contributing factors of its success was the magnificent performance of Rajkummar Rao as “Vidrohiji”.
