“An enthralling survival thriller” is the best way to describe the recently released Bollywood movie “Trapped” directed by the talented Vikramaditya Motwane. This movie starring the brilliant Rajkummar Rao, and produced by Phantom Films basically revolves around a man trapped in an apartment with no water, food, or electricity. Having watched this movie recently in a theatre, I can proudly and safely say that this is an extremely rare survival thriller has never been attempted in world cinema. So here is presenting three major reasons as to why I believe that this movie is an extremely rare survival thriller.

MAJOR REASON 1- THE INTRIGUING STORY OF THIS MOVIE:

Generally speaking, the story of most survival thrillers made around the world are generally set either on  islands, mines, spacecraft, lifeboat, etc, and not in an apartment of an high rise building. It is this intriguing and exciting premise brilliantly conceived by writers Amit Joshi and Hardik Mehta,  that makes this Bollywood movie “Trapped” not only a worth a watch but, also an extremely rare survival thriller ever to be made in world cinema. The basic concept that an individual could also get “trapped” in a city like Mumbai so full of energy and people right throughout any given day adds a lot of intrigue of the movie. Additionally, the use of humorous elements by the writers makes this story not only “interesting” but “entertaining” as well. Furthermore, apart from dealing with the issue of survival, this story also shows us how a sudden “twist of fate”can completely transform a man’s life, which is what makes  watching this movie a  cinematic experience to remember, especially for those who genuinely love and take cinema seriously.

MAJOR REASON 2- THE BRILLIANT DIRECTION, EDITING, AND BACKGROUND SCORE USED:

“A feeling of claustrophobia” is what one instantly senses while watching this Bollywood movie, and for that credit must be given to Motwane for his brilliant direction and deft handling of a unique script. In addition, the director must also be applauded for subtly using the city of Mumbai as character by itself through the use of great cinematography, thereby making it an extremely intriguing and rich cinematic experience for the audiences. Furthermore, credit must also be given to the cinematographer Siddharth Diwan for supporting the vision of the directors (and writers) by realistically bringing to life an atmosphere of claustrophobia in an apartment through the use of brilliant visuals.

Apart from the brilliant direction and cinematography, this movie is also backed up by some excellent editing and background score.  The editing by Nitin Baid is extremely sharp and crisp, and as result this movie is extremely engaging right from start to finish. More importantly at no point does the movie seem to drag, and for this credit must go to the brilliant editing. The  haunting background score given by Alokananda Dasgupta is brilliant, and plays an important part in building the atmosphere of claustrophobia and tension that the narrative of this Bollywood movie required.

MAJOR REASON 3- THE “BRILLIANCE” OF ACTOR RAJKUMMAR RAO:

” I was living on carrot and black coffee” stated lead actor of Trapped, Rajkummar Rao with regards to the preparations he underwent to get into the skin of his character  Shaurya he plays in this intriguing Bollywood movie . It is this intense dedication shown by the actor that shines through in the performance throughout this movie. In addition, what is also clearly visible in the performance of this “brilliant and brave” actor in this movie is the use of body language to emote  (i.e. the primary function of an actor), an extremely rare quality seen in an actors/actresses working in the Hindi film industry i.e. Bollywood. For example, his performance during the climax where just a look into his eyes tells you what he is feeling is truly worth praising. Overall, it is truly a magnificent performance by an actor who is not only “talented” but also “fearless”, a quality rarely seen especially in the so called “Bollywood” stars.
