Putu a south indian breakfast delicacy.

They say that “Variety is the spice of life” and this idiom certainly hold true for Indian cuisine. Adding more variety to Indian cuisine is a delicacy from South India  known as “PUTU”. Putu is basically a rice dish layered with coconut which is then steamed and served hot along with chickpea curry or banana. This dish is basically a breakfast delicacy very popular in South Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Although it is also popular in many areas in Sri Lanka as well.

Puttu is basically made up of thickly ground rice along with grated coconut and water to add. Initially rice is thickly ground and kept ready. To this ground rice water is added slowly until the right texture is obtained and ready to be steamed. For the purpose of steaming a vessel known as “Puttu Kutti” is used which basically consists of two sections. The lower section holds the water and the upper section holds the Puttu. It is in the upper section of the vessel that the rice mixture is inserted with layers of grated coconut. Also the vessel contains perforated lids that separate the sections to allow for the steam to pass through them. There are also a number alternative vessels with different designs that are used to make puttu. Overall Puttu is a breakfast delicacy usually eaten with variety of curries such as chickpea, fish curry, chicken curry etc or at times along with banana as well for those who have a sweet tooth and prefer a sweet taste.

Although Puttu is typically a South Indian delicacy it can enjoyed by one and all in any part of the world they belong to with great delight. Also the simple fact that it can be eaten along with spicy curries or a sweet fruit like banana makes it easy for anyone to consume it depending on the palate of one’s choice. In totality though this delicacy called “Puttu” certainly has its own charm and adds to the variety of the rich Indian cuisine which eventually adds to the spice in life an essential ingredient in the journey called “Life”.
