The charming Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise as Lt Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the Hollywood classic “TOP GUN”.

“I feel the need-the need for speed” a dialogue from the Hollywood classic “TOP GUN” clearly epitomizes the fascinating living “On the Edge” lifestyle of the protagonist “Lieutenant Pete Mitchell or Maverick”. Over the years this character has acquired a cult status in the world of cinema and, mainly due to the charm and the style brought to the role by the charismatic Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise.

The character of Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is that of a young dynamic Naval Aviator of the United States who happens to be a true daredevil and hence loves to life on the edge. It is after “Cougar” a fellow naval aviator loses the edge and decides to give up flying that Maverick gets an opportunity to join the Navy’s Fighter Weapon’s School also called “TOP GUN” which specializes in teaching dogfighting or air combat maneuvering (ACM) techniques. It is at this school that he also finds his nemesis in Tom Kazanski “Iceman” (Val Kilmer) while also managing to fall in love with a beautiful Top Gun instructor Charlotte Blackwood “Charlie” (Kelly McGillis).

The basic essence of this character lies in the fact that he is a highly talented pilot with great instincts as a result of which he is highly unpredictable. Also the fact that his father Duke Mitchell who also was a great pilot and who according to official records during the Vietnam war made a huge mistake as a result of which he was killed and, which Maverick refuses to believe plays on his mind and which is why he is always trying to prove himself as the best. He is also is a charming personality with a great knack of seducing beautiful woman which is clearly seen by his seduction of Charlie who is supposed to be his instructor and yet she ends up becoming his girlfriend. Also the scene in the bar where he and his flying partner and best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) sings the song “You lost that lovin feelin” a clear confirmation that he knows how to charm his way right into a woman’s heart.

What also makes this character so fascinating is that though the character is extremely talented, self confident, charming, and larger than life yet he has a vulnerable side to him. This vulnerable side comes to the fore especially when he loses his best friend Goose and RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) in a flying accident causing them to eject out and it is during ejecting that Goose bumps right into the aircraft canopy and dies. It is after this unfortunate incident that demons begin to creep into the confidence of Maverick which is clearly seen when he decides to quit flying. This vulnerable side of this charismatic character clearly shows us no matter how talented an individual maybe inner demons will always exist in one form or the other and it is up to the individual to fight those demons in order to move on in life. This is exactly what happens to Maverick who along with some help from Chief instructor and Commander Mike Metcalf “Viper” (Tom Skereitt) who also has immense faith in his abilities is able to overcome all his demons and manages to shoot down four enemy MIG aircrafts in a mission to provide air support to a communication ship drifted into hostile waters sanctioned during the graduation party.

As for the performance of Tom Cruise as the charming and extremely confident Lt. Pete Mitchell or “Maverick” which is brilliant to say the least. With extremely good use of body language especially of note is the use of his smile to bring out the charm in his personality he is certainly a stand out and possesses star quality of extremely high caliber throughout the role. Also the vulnerable aspect of the character has been brilliantly depicted by Cruise which actually is the most important feature of this character. All in all a brilliant performance by Cruise in a movie and a role that eventually made him the Hollywood megastar that he is today.

So with a mixture of charm, confidence, and vulnerability all fused together this character of Maverick is certainly one of the most interesting characters that world cinema as seen. The fact that this character has only added to the cult following of superstar Tom Cruise only ensures that this character that will always be remembered by genuine cinema lovers all around the globe particularly the female sex.
