To the shock of many Americans as well as people the world over Republican Donald Trump has been voted in as the 45th President of the United States of America. Having defeated Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton by quite a wide margin (i.e.290 seats to the Republican as compared to 228 seats to the Democrats) Trump is all set to officially begin his tenure as President of the United States on January 20th 2017. Although, this victory may appear surprising, there are a few logical factors that have contributed to it in a big way. So here is presenting four major factors that contributed to Trump’s highly unlikely victory
1. Targeting the Working Class
In a smart move, Donald Trump decided to design his campaign keeping in mind the aspirations of the frustrated “working class” that have been completed ignored by previous governments. This working class (predominantly white) essentially includes people belonging to the rural areas, of which many of them (i.e. men and women) do not possess a college degree. He essentially targeted this group by using rhetoric’s that were anti-immigrant, racist, sexist etc. The end result being that he did manage to find a suppose base strong enough to win in key states such as Ohio, Florida, and North Carolina and thereby eventually the election.
2. Creation of an abrasive image
The biggest “irony” about Trump’s surprising win has been his creation of an “abrasive image” through the use of racist/sexist slurs. Apart from insulting the Muslim community, he also made degrading comments against the Latin American community (especially Mexicans) and women in general. Yet at the end of the battle for the US presidency he emerged victorious, clearly indicating that this image had a huge impact on his supporters. In fact it now seems that the creation of an “arrogant and abrasive” image has proven to be Trump’s masterstroke.
3. The “James” Factor
About less than two weeks before the election, the FBI director James Comey via a letter declared that he was reopening the “email scandal”( first exposed in March 2015) involving Hillary Clinton, that too after recommending on July 5th 2016 that the United States Department of Justice should file no criminal charges on Clinton. It was then during the period between Comey’s recommendation not to file charges and he doing a U-turn, and reopening the scandal just weeks before election day that apparently gave Trump enough time to consolidate from a position of uncertainty to that of strength. He did this by convincing conservatives who did not want to back him to eventually support him.
4. Unconventional Campaigning
The political campaign used by Trump was extremely unconventional which included the use massive public rallies instead of the standard “door knocking” strategy. In addition, he also made an effort to reach out to people by travelling to states such as Wisconsin and Michigan which many “political pundits” thought was out of his reach. It was thus his unique style of campaigning which mainly focused on “public rallies” that eventually proved to be one of the major reasons behind his convincing victory.
So with Trump having being voted in as America’s next president to replace the incumbent Barrack Obama here is hoping that his domestic and foreign policies benefits both the American citizens as well as people living all around the globe.
