According to “The World Tourism Organization”, an agency belonging to the United Nations the term sex tourism is officially defined as “Trips organized from within the tourism sector, or from outside this sector but using its structures and networks, with the primary purpose of effecting a commercial sexual relationship by the tourist with residents at the destination”. Now there are number of countries such as Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba etc that have gained a reputation of being a haven for sex tourists. One such country that over the years that has not only become notorious for being a paradise for sexual predators but, has also suffered a lot due to it is Philippines. There are many reasons why this extremely picturesque country comprising of  beautiful people has become a hub for sex tourism. The four major reasons are as follows

1.  Poverty and Population explosion

poverty-3

Like many of the countries in the “developing” world a large number of Filipinos live in poverty. Such is the level of poverty in the country that in 2014 the National Statistical Coordination Board of Philippines estimated that more than one quarter of the population (i.e. 98.8%) were living below the poverty line i.e. a 78% increase since 2013. It is this ever increasing poverty that gives rise to a large number of females not educating themselves as their families are unable to afford decent education . This lack of education thereby forcing these females to take up jobs in sleazy bars which are frequented by tourists from western countries (especially from United States) who just want sex. It is thus poverty that has actually sowed the seed of sex tourism in this beautiful country.

Secondly, this country for many years now has possessed a high population growth rate of 1.7% which is shockingly even higher than world’s population growth rate of about 1.2%. The major factor behind such high population growth rates  is mainly “unplanned child birth” (and since this country is strongly Christian abortion is a sin) compelling families in the country to feed more stomachs than they can actually handle, which in turn leads to poverty. It is this poverty that leads to lack of education causing females ( many times children) to find work in seedy bars where western men frequently visit in need for sex.

2. Rising unemployment

The rise in poverty in the country has in turn led to rise of another social evil called “unemployment”.In addition, what has also contributed to unemployment is the rise of number of graduates skilled in a profession that was in demand in the past. For example in the healthcare industry nursing was a profession that was in demand especially overseas at one time. Unfortunately though this demand has significantly reduced over the years, and yet the education system in the country continues to produces nursing graduates.

So essentially it is combination of abject poverty which has resulted in lack of education and oversupply of graduates in  professions that are no more in demand that has led to rise in unemployment. In turn unemployment has forced many women to work in shady bars thereby becoming an instrument of pleasure for sex tourists.

3. Rampant Corruption

Corruption in the Philippines (like in most developing countries) is similar to the fourth stage of cancer i.e. rampant. So rampant it is, that the government along with law enforcing agencies have over the years allowed western tourists to travel to the country just for sex. In fact there have been cases where western tourists loaded with money and with some help provided by the system (government and police) have set up bars and hired unfortunate Filipino women plagued with poverty and lack of education literally as “sex toys” for foreigners.

4. The presence of US military bases

In the year 1947, the then Philippine President Roxas signed an agreement that granted two military bases i.e. Naval Subic Bay and Clark Airforce Base to the United States. It was at the Airforce Base that the sex trade eventually flourished so much so that it was given the sobriquet “Mecca of Sex Trade”. This business continued to flourish during the Vietnam War during which the American Navy officially sanctioned this trade. It is via open sex trade operating through these bases that this beautiful country fast gained a reputation throughout the world (thanks to American Navy Officers) of being a haven for “sex loving tourists”.

So given above are  a few major reasons as to why such a scenic country has unfortunately become renowned for “sex tourists”. Here is hoping that the Government of Philippines does take the necessary measures to eradicate the reputation that this  country has developed over the years of being a “haven for sex tourism” because, I for one sincerely believe that the true beauty of a Filipino lies in her “soul” and not her “body”.
